Foreword to LOVE AND OTHER HUMAN TRAGEDY

LOVE AND OTHER HUMAN TRAGEDY is a joint project between Warwick University’s CAP society and the UNITE! theatre company. Over the last few months we have built up a group of writers, actors, designers and producers who have come together to explore the telling of folk tales. By the time the project is finished over forty people will have been involved in creating three original pieces of theatre, five original pieces of writing, publishing an illustrated book and taking part in one regional and one international arts festival!

The project consists, very simply, of taking familiar stories and re-interpreting them in new ways – through everything from performance and prose to poetry, paint and Photoshop. It’s an idea I’ve wanted to develop since the 2000 Edinburgh Festival, when I was involved in a beautiful little play based on the story of Rapunzel. Then, in November 2003, I found a book of Grimm fairy-tales with some really great illustrations by contemporary graphic designers. The idea came into focus: a collection of retold folk tales and a collection of short performances based on them. Illustrations would come from images from the performances, which would in turn be based on the stories. The adaptations and the book would grow up alongside each other. Simple.

This project couldn’t have happened without a great many people, not least Tom Perrin, without whose help and support none of this would have been possible. We'd also like to thank the Lord Rootes Memorial Fund, whose generous financial support has made possible our involvement in the Edinburgh Festival. There have been so many people involved at so many levels that I could fill many volumes just thanking them. But thank you all. It really wouldn’t have been possible without you.
